I was responsible for the snow coming off the snowplow in these shots. The effect was created using layered MPM simulations. To allow for faster iteration during the art direction process, I broke the simulation into several parts and focused on sculpting each one individually before combining them back together at render time. This kept simulation times manageable while giving me more control over the final shapes coming out of the sim.
These magic effects required a careful balance to achieve the level of control needed for such highly art-directed systems. The magic was created entirely in POPs, using a mix of procedural and simulated elements that gave us flexibility in shaping and timing the effect. Multiple POPs layers were then combined and composited to create the final look.
I was responsible for the character fog interaction in these shots. Though this effect appears as simple atmospheric fog, a great deal of work went into sculpting shapes that supported the character’s performance and motion while remaining subtle enough not to pull focus. Additionally, several post-simulation processes were used to clean up and mask portions of the fog so the characters remained fully visible.
Responsible for the snowplow exhaust across these 9 shots. This effect required careful attention to continuity, as well as a variety of simulation tricks to smoothly run the Pyro sim at the speed of the snowplow. The goal was to create dirty, ominous smoke that supported the threatening mood of the sequence.
